At a guess, you made the special trip off of the beaten track to experience the epic grasslands, the beautiful Mongolian horses, the rather different cuisine and the breathtaking culture. What better way of experiencing the true essence of Inner Mongolia than by traveling to a sacred spot with a real Mongolian guide, and taking part in a traditional festival that is integral to the very being of the Mongolian lifestyle? This trip will take your breath away, set your heart racing, and will without doubt be a high light to your stay in China! What is Naadaam Festival?Naadam Festival is the biggest event of the year, equivalent possibly to our Christmas! It is known as the eriyn gurvan naadam, after the three 'manly sports' of wrestling, archery and horse racing. The festival is held all over the Mongolian area! So what will you be doing?-See the unseen Mongolia-Have a stay in a small Mongolian City-Watch sunrise over the grasslands-Try traditional Mongolian Cuisine-Watch a traditional horse race-Watch or take part in Mongolian Wrestling-Watch Mongolian Archery-Meet the coolest camel the world has ever seen!!!Nadaam tourDay 1:You will leave Hohhot in the Anda Guesthouse Minibus with your lovely guides and set off on a trip, which takes around 4 hours. The scenery is staggering (I strongly recommend putting the action or movement setting on your camera and get snapping!) You will have one toilet stop thats memory will probably stay with you for the rest of your life. You will arrive at a small very modern city in the early evening where you can have a look around the square before getting ready to go out for dinner. The guides will look after you every step of the way!You will take a traditional Mongolian meal, which will involve the traditional salty tea, boiled mutton and a variety of dishes similar to Chinese food. (You may even get to try some baijoonce tried never forgotten!!!)You will retire to your hotel (included in the price) not to late so that you are ready to arise at 4am.Day 2:Your guides will be waiting outside in the mini bus where they will take you on an approximately 1 hour ? journey to the festival (nice nap time as it is still pitch black!!)You will arrive at a small farm complete with goats, sheep and a camel. Here is another excellent photo opportunity. It is freezing cold, so make use of your jumpers whilst you wait for the sun to rise. When the sun has risen you will be taken by minibus to the summit of a large hill. This will be decorated in traditional Nadaam festival clours, flags and stones. There will also be a series of ready prepared offerings, one of these including a goat (the meat is ready prepared and on a plate).A holy man then reads from his notes over the offerings whilst you sit or stand in the tranquility of the Mongolian grasslands. This is a very peaceful time. You are able to take photographs throughout. The local people will then go through the motions of the festival, adding stones to the pile, pouring milk over the stones and burning poo. Yes..burning poo!!!When the ceremony draws to a close you will be taken for a tradional breakfast in a yurt ( a traditional Mongolian house). The days activities will then commence. It will begin with local children racing Mongolian horses through a 10km! course. This was the highlight of the experience for me. The guides drive the mini bus to the start of the race, and then follow the horses alongside on the road. This experiencing is very exhilarating, and you almost feel like part of the race!! Again an excellent opportunity for photographs! You will then be ordered into a large circle, where you can either watch or take partyes you can live out your fantasies of being a real wrestlerleathers and all!!! This is complete with trophies and music! You may then get to see some archery! The guides will then return you back to Anda Guesthouse, or link the trip with a nights stay in a yurt for horse riding and a grassland tour the following day. What you will need: A back pack (the majority of your stuff will be kept safe and secure for you in the hostel) A Warm jumper (before the sun rises it gets COLD!) Trainers / Comfy shoes (your not climbing Mount Everest but if you fancy a stroll around. Here you can truly get the real Mongolian feeling whilst relaxing and enjoying our comfortable and friendly atmosphere with all modern conveniences at your disposal. If you are lucky you may even hear the happy staff sing you a traditional Mongolian song! We can also help you with arranging your onward journey and travel plans within both Inner Mongolia and further afield, our hostel being well connected with others in Mainland China so you will know the best places to go, and get the best advice! Our staff will help you to their best ability with any transport requests / queries and also with their pleasure. Hohhot, as well as being an ideal base from which to explore Inner Mongolia, also has direct transport links to major mainland China cities: by rail to Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Tianjin, Suzhou, Harbin, Shenyang as well as multiple other destinations. By bus easily to Beijing, Xian, Pingyao, Datong etc, and Hohhot's Baita International Airport has direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Wuhan, Hong Kong etc., and to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia (with appropriate visa which we can help you to acquire.) As we are conveniently located in the centre of the city, we are within easy reach of the train station from which we can provide a free pick-up service also provided from the bus station - for your convenience to bring you directly here with a smile! [The citys airport can be reached in around half-an-hours time by local taxi at a fee c.50rmb, or we can arrange to pick you up for 60 RMB/1car (1--3persons), 100 RMB/1Mini bus or jeep(1--9 persons)].From our base you can tour the city which was founded by Altan Khan in the 16th century, its name meaning Blue City in Mongolian, in reference to the placid blue skies over the panoramic grasslands (the color blue in Mongolian culture is associated with the sky, eternity and purity). Of particular note are the temples and pagodas set in a fully-modernized urban environment: the 5-tiered, Indian-influenced Wuta pagoda dating from 1732 - within which walls there are more than 1,500 figures of Buddha - the monks praying and chanting in the Da Zhao and Xilitu Zhao temple and Buddhist lamasery, and the newer Guanyin Si complex popular with the locals and famous for its oversized sputa. For those wishing to investigate Inner Mongolias history, there is the newly constructed Museum, with exhibits ranging from displays concerning the legendary Khans, others dating back to prehistoric dinosaurs and also forward to space-age rockets. Here you may also learn about the provinces other ethnic groups in colorful displays. Of course, no visit would be complete without trying the local food and specialty hotpot also available in-house at our hostel by request. Being a large and modern city, Chinese, Western and Asian-fusion restaurants are all easily accessible, our hostel being literally one minutes walk away from the Restaurant Street even though you may well feel guilty for visiting the local international brand fried-chicken establishments! There are also bars, coffee-shops, popular karaoke KTV bar/discos as well as a multitude of street-stalls selling meat-kebabs, local cuisine and of course the regions famous milk tea.
